Place and Identity
The concept of the rhetoric of place
and identity seems like an extremely broad topic. I see it as
understanding the point of view that somebody is writing from. That's
where this concept becomes ridiculously large. Under that definition
every single thing that is created and viewed by an audience falls under
that topic. Everyone grows up differently and reacts to things
differently based off life experience, so every work can be dissected to
find the authors unique "place and identity". I'm interested in
looking at speeches and other media a little closer now, like the Letter
from the Birmingham Jail example shown in class. The quick example in
class with
Martin Luther King Jr. applies to the concept very well. The essay
stands well on its
own if you didn’t know anything about the author at all, but knowing the
reasons he was put in jail and the events that happened before and after
make
the experience of reading the essay have more depth. Knowing the history
behind what a person
is writing about is very interesting to me, since I used to do pretty
well in history class way back in high school. Looking forward to seeing
where we go with the topic in class, and hope that by reading some of
your guys work I can get my own inspiration for a topic. Good luck with
your assignments and see ya next blog post. Adios

This was a good post! I really like how you are focused on knowing the deeper meaning and more of the history of people and what they have been through. We can always see where people are from and from there be able to make our own inferences about them based on what we think of where they are from. However knowing experiences contribute greatly to this.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was writing my blog post, I was actually thinking about writing about Martin Luther King myself. History is the best example of Place and Identity, and I think it is one of the main reasons people study history. When I was listening to MJK's video it reminded me of the civil war and how where you were located in America effected your status in society.
ReplyDeleteI was deeply touched by the video of Martin Luther King in class,
ReplyDeleteI think it's a great example of place and identity. events make people...peole also make events...
That's really interesting to bring the historical aspect of place & identity. I had a similar thought about the two immigration photos from class
